Information

Recording

The recordings for the album started in November 2003 in the El Crotijo Studio in Spain. A making of from the album recordings was released in 2006 on DVD 2 of Völkerball. The first instrumental the band wrote was the song Dalai Lama. That song was also the last one to get final lyrics by Till.[1] The band originally planned the album to be a double-album, but rejected that idea.[2]

MTV Germany held a competition to win a meet and greet with Rammstein in early May 2004. Three winners were announced on 4 May 2004 in the MTV show "MTV Select". A few days later these winners and two people from the management, who were resposible for running the FanArea back then, flew to Stockholm, where they were played half of the album in unmastered form. Press listenings, which were also set around that time, got cancelled.[1] But when a press listening finally took place, the band premiered nine songs, which were Flugangst, Keine Lust, Amour, Amerika, Morgenstern, Wo bist du, Mein Teil, Reise, Reise and Los.[3]

Before finally being named Reise, Reise, the band had different ideas for the album title. Some of those were Nein, Rot, Amore and Rosenrot.[4][5] A first release date was set for 28 June,[1] which was postponed to 20 September and then again pushed a week, to 27 September.

Other songs

In different interviews the band mentioned that six songs were recorded during the Reise, Reise sessions, which were then later released on Rosenrot. However a total of seven songs seem to have been recorded during Reise, Reise:

There are known demos, which have not been officially released in any form:

Promotion

The album was promoted with three special interview CDs. Each CD included an interview with two members of the band. On CD 1 Till and Flake are interviewed, CD 2 features Paul and Olli, and CD 3 includes an interview with Richard and Schneider.

Cover

The artwork for this album was designed by Plantage. The cover shows the outside of an aircraft's black box, a small device that records everything that is happening on the plane and is nearly indestructible. When a plane crashes, the black box can be recovered to retrieve the audio file which can then be used to determine what happened on the plane before it crashed.

As a reference to this, there is a hidden track on the album, before "Reise, Reise" on track 0 - it can only be read by CD players that can rewind past track 1. It is a black box recording of the Japanese Airlines Flight 123. During the crash, 520 of 524 passengers were killed. Up to now, it remains the deadliest single-aircraft crash in history.

For Japan the band chose a different artork. The cover shows the ice breaker USS Atka, on a photo taken by Charles Swithinbank on 13 March 1960 at McMurdo Station, Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Also the booklet and CD/DVD designs were changed to fit the cover. All of this design, the cover artwork was changed a little, was used six months later for the album Rosenrot. In 2009, Japan got a SHM CD re-release of the album, which now featured the original orange artwork.
