Sonne is a song by Rammstein. It is the third track on the Mutter album.

Sonne is the third song on the album Mutter by Rammstein.
Not to be confused with the 1995 song of the same name.

Background

• This song was written on request by one of the Klitschko brothers in 2000, because he wanted a new song for his entrance to a fight. Rammstein wrote the song while having in mind, that he lifts up his arms in the ring during "hier kommt die Sonne" (here comes the sun).
  • Flake said the song was written for Wladimir Klitschko, which is opposing the majority of interviews with the rest of the band where it's stated to have been requested by his brother Vitali, that was also a boxer during the same time. Considering the multiple statements about the brother in question having used a song from Tina Turner before and having lost an important boxing fight, further confusion arises. Wladimir used to have Simply the Best by Tina Turner as entrance hymn, while Vitali lost his WBO heavyweight title on 1 April 2000. The brother who presented a new entrance hymn "after 100 changes to finally replace Simply the Best" ended up being Wladimir on 14 October 2000.
• Paul said that the song was originally meant to be a instrumental track: "We felt that he needed a really epic piece of music, and originally we planned it as a purely instrumental track, something to make the most of his walk out to the fight."
• Paul said that every time the band went into the rehearsal room to write the song, they tried to move in a way that a boxer would move, to get the tempo just right.
• The song was made in two days. Paul: "Someone rushed into the rehearsal room and said: "Hey, Klitschko needs a song! Klitschko needs a song! After two days we were done. We have never done a song as fast as "Sonne". We dropped everything."
• The song was supposed to premiere in 2000 for Klitschko's champion fight, but he lost the fight before, so it wasn't used. Klitschko ended up using a different song, because Rammstein's song "was a bit too hard".
• The female vocal sample is taken from the sample CD Spectrasonics Symphony of Voices.
• The instrumental of Sonne was the first instrumental ever officially released. But after being used by some people to sing fascist lyrics on it, the band chose to no longer release instrumentals of regular songs.
• The German metalcore band Caliban covered the song in 2010 for their EP Coverfield.
• The piano version of the song was used during the credits sequence of the Deutschland music video.
  • The piano version was also used as an outro during the Europe Stadium Tour 2019.
• Sonne won the 2021 Song gegen Song contest that was being held on Rammstein's official Instagram account, beating Du hast in the final round with 61% of the votes.
