In the GDR, we tried to think as internationally as possible. We didn't listen to any East German radio stations, didn't read any newspapers, didn't wear any East German clothes, and didn't participate in public life. We didn't go to the polls and were happy when the SPD was elected in the FRG. We probably knew the international punk scene better than the protagonists themselves. With all our might we tried to get hold of Western instruments to play on them for days and nights. | |||
Most of the time I was alone, rehearsing all night long on some borrowed instruments and recording every emerging idea on a cassette recorder. (By the way, do you know the game: The king makes coffee, but no milk? There was also the nice sentence: The king likes cassettes but no tapes. For the slow ones: He tap dances to it, although he doesn't really like to dance). In any case, there was a lot of music on my cassettes, which I also liked to listen to. Even some friends could only be persuaded to listen briefly. It took me a long time to realize that a song only becomes a song when it is sung to. Even a fantasy language reaches the listener better than any instrumental. So I stuck a microphone between my knees and mumbled softly into it so as not to alarm the neighbors. I had already sung along while listening to my blues records and thus acquired the necessary English vocabulary. All of a sudden, I now really had to follow some song structures and so something similar to songs emerged that immediately had an interesting effect on the listener. The only problem was that I couldn't stand my voice from the tape and even more so I couldn't be there when my voice rang out and friends were there. So I had to turn in my tapes and hope people would listen. Fortunately, my voice didn't affect others the way it did me. At most on those who understood English and immediately began to doubt my state of mind. So I tried to do German lyrics. Then it struck me that I had nothing to say. I had no message that I wanted to convey to the world. I was not yet in love, not yet separated, and had no idea of anything. (Later, though, when I had experienced it all, I couldn't think of anything either). | Most of the time I was alone, rehearsing all night long on some borrowed instruments and recording every emerging idea on a cassette recorder. |
