Recording started in 2015. In January the band recorded the first demos for the songs. A minimum of six songs were already recorded in February 2015:
It was grey and it was depressing. My studio should’ve been my escape but in an environment like this I only wound up writing more depressing songs. It would’ve been a no-win situation if we hadn’t come up with some good stuff for the next record, but we did. More than we needed, actually. The goal was to get two more songs and suddenly we had six in the basket. I’ll be taking these songs along with others we’ve done back into the studio in to record with the same crew. With any luck we’ll be mixing by late April March giving us a new Emigrate record in September. The grey should be gone by then, but for now I wish everyone more light than I’ve been getting here. Unless you’re writing depressing songs too.Bis gleich, Richard Z.K.
On 7 April 2015, the second studio update followed. Also, Richard revealed the working title for the album: SSL II. Richard reported that the drummer Mikko Sirén recorded eight songs in two days. Along with the post, some new photos were uploaded of all people involved in the making of the album to this point: Richard, Mikko Sirén, Olsen Involtini, Arnaud Giroux and Sascha Moser.
Here’s a quick update. We just finished recording drums for SSL II. Mikko flew in from Australia where he was on tour with Apocalyptica. This guy is an ANIMAL on drums and there is no higher compliment than that. He was able to bang out 8 tracks in 2 days like a champ. Much respect!
The atmosphere in the studio is very relaxed and free from frustration… I’m quite enjoying myself as I haven’t had one panic attack yet. Now that the drums are there I have set up my amps and recording chain to lay down the guitars. I don’t have the luxury this time to spend two months on it which is probably good since last time I ended up chasing the dragon (a.k.a. sound that doesn’t exist).
Ok, let’s all get back to work and I wish everybody some sunny days. We deserve it!
In 2016 Richard's studio was flooded, "and half of the equipment, including the hard disk drive, destroyed, so I had to basically start again." "All I had of the songs I'd been working on was my memory."
In an interview, released on 5 June 2018, Joe Letz confirmed that the album was being mixed.
On 18 October 2018, the UK website of EMP leaked the official tracklist of the album. From the tracklist it was visible that two songs were already recorded for Silent So Long, and one song was recorded for Emigrate.
On 28 October 2018, the songs A Million Degrees, You Are So Beautiful and I'm Not Afraid were premiered during an interview with Richard on Rock Antenne Radio.
There are three different guest features on A Million Degrees. Those are:
- Ben Kowalewicz: Singer for the rock band Billy Talent.
- Till Lindemann: Vocalist of Rammstein.
- Cardinal Copia: Singer for the Swedish rock band Ghost.
Five other guest appearances were planned, but did not feature:
- David Bowie: Solo artist. Died before recording.
- Chester Bennington: Vocalist of Linkin Park. Died before recording.
- Chris Cornell: Vocalist for Soundgarden and Audioslave. Would have appeared on Mother. Died before recording.
- Serj Tankian: Vocalist of System of a Down. Would have appeared on War. Declined on the grounds that Richard's vocals would suffice.
- Iggy Pop: Solo artist. Was too busy due to a water damage at his home.
