Information

A trailer for the video was released on 26 March 2019 on Facebook by the official Rammstein page. This trailer can be seen here. The promotion for the video began on 24 March 2019, when the director, Specter, uploaded the first clip of the video to his Instagram story. Soon after different other clips were found on Spotify, when listening to different Rammstein songs. Specter also teased the video on his Instagram profile, posting various behind the scenes pictures and video teasers. Around 12:30 AM on 28 March 2019, the video was temporarily leaked on Vimeo by Specter. It was taken down swiftly, although word of the leak traveled quickly.

Scenes

The video is a depiction of Germany's history. Ranging from the year 16 to the future. The following historic events are portrayed:

  • Germania magna: It is often noted that the intro of the video would show the so called Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, during which an alliance of Germanic people ambushed three Roman legions led by Publius Quinctilius Varus and their auxiliaries. But since the text shows the year 16 A.D., and the Teutoburg Forest battle took place the year before, it is far more likely, that the depicted scene is the victory of Roman general Germanicus against the Germanic people by numbers. But the Roman legions were so weakened, that they had to give up plans to further conquer all of Germania magna.[1]
  • Black Death: The scenes with the monks are a nod to the Black Death pandemic in Europe, occuring from 1346 to 1353. When arriving at the Monastery, numerous rats can be seen walking around on the ground.
  • Weimar Republic: The Weimar Republic is depicted via the box fight between Till and Richard. Boxing was a super popular sport back then. Germania bein dressed in luxury clothes could also depic the "Golden Twenties," during which Germany experienced a healthy economic growth and spurt in experimental and creative efforts in the field of art.[2][3]
  • LZ 129 Hindenburg: The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship. The depicted scene is the ship burning on 6 May 1937.[4]
  • Third Reich: The Third Reich is portrayed by Olli, Paul, Till, and Flake standing at the gallows, while Schneider and Richard are acting as Nazi generals. All four band members are marked for their "crimes" with triangles and stars on their chest: Olli wears a pink triangle, which was used to identify homosexuals, Paul is wearing the yellow badge (in Germany also known as "Judenstern"), which identifies someone as a Jew, Till is having a red triangle over a yellow triangle, which was used for Jews that were also political enemies, and Flake is wearing a red triangle, which identified political enemies. In the background someone with a green triangle can be seen, which identifies him as a criminal.[5] During this scene, the take off of a V-2 rocket can be seen.[6]
  • German Democratic Republic: 1949 to 1990
  • Red Army Faction: The Red Army Faction was a West German far-left militant group founded in 1970 and active until 1998. The band is seen posing as the RAF and keeping Germania hostage. This is a nod to the "German Autumn" in 1977, during which the RAF kept Hanns Martin Schleyer hostage and later killed him, kept doing terrorist attacks on the government, capitalism and society of (West) Germany, aswell as the suicide of several RAF members in the JVA Stuttgart.[7][8] While not directly resembling members of the RAF, Till could be depicting Ulrike Meinhof, Paul could be Andreas Baader, and Richard could be Gudrun Ensslin.
  • Future: The video always cuts with scenes from a future, during which Germania is buried in a coffin in space.

Video facts

  • Specter revealed on his Instagram Story that his biggest idea was to cast a coloured German woman as Germania. [9]
  • The actress Ruby Commey, who plays Germania in the video, descends from a German colony of Togo, Africa.[9]
