Information

Recording

The band originally planned to record the album in Poland,[1] but then decided to start the pre-production for the album in Haus Weimar, Heiligendamm, in September 1999.[2] The house was completely empty and the band had to buy beds, a kitchen and cupboards, to make themselves a home.[1] A cook was also hired by the band. His dog, Argos, later played the role of Hitler's dog Blondie in the German movie "Downfall".[3] The band worked on about 13 songs there.[2] During this time the band worked on the instrumental songs and Till wrote the lyrics, which he pinned to a wall for everyone to see. Paul wrote grades and notes under the lyrics. The good lyrics stayed on the wall, while the bad ones were removed. Additionally, the band also had a board with all written songs on it, as well as notes as to what was still missing in which song. Every morning the band gathered around that board and tried to eliminate all the missing pieces of the songs.[4] After four months in Heiligendamm, the band moved on to Berlin in order to work more on the recorded songs. This move happened in December. At the same time, the band started to search for a good recording studio. Olli explained the requirements:

"It should be abroad, the drums should be able to be recorded on site, so that we can still realize short-term changes and generally play together, and of course it should be beautiful."

In early 2000 the band wanted to go to the Miraval Studios in France. But since they are extremely cold before May, the band had a forced break to bridge. After the band went into the studios, they didn't start recording immediately, but discussed Till's lyrics again. After six weeks the band visited the Galaxy Studios in Sweden to meet up with Ronald Prent.[1] One source says that Ronald mixed four songs for the band, of which two were Mutter and Klitschko.[2] The other source mentions six songs being played to journalists at the Galaxy Studios.[1] But one thing is mentioned in both sources: Klitschko was part of it. After listening to his mixes, the band was not satisfied with Prent's work. When the band was searching for a new mixer, names dropped were Brendan O'Brian, Andy Wallace and Dave Ogilvie.[2] In the end the band worked with Stefan Glaumann in the MVG Studio in Stockholm in October 2000. During that time Till and Flake were in a bar in Ludvika, where Till got into a fight. He was helped by Peter Tägtgren, which later led to both forming Lindemann in 2015. About Glaumann Flake said, that he was really good at his job, but also really slow. He would need five days for one song and two days rest. For the time in Stockholm, the band moved into the flat of an elderly couple that had just died shortly before. It was rented to the band by their son. The band agreed on being a minimum of three people there, to get a more lively feel into the flat.[5]

The orchestra on the album is the Filmorchester Babelsberg, which was recorded at Studio Saal 1 in Berlin. The band was recommended someone to transpose the music. When they arrived and the orchestra started playing, the band felt that something wasn't right. It took two or three hours to realise, that the guy who transposed the music of the band, changed the arrangements. The orchestra was convinced to come back the day after, so the music can be completeley transposed again.[3]

During a second press listening eight songs were premiered: Sandmann, Ohne dich, Mutter, Sonne, Nebel, Adios, Pastor and Rein raus.[1]

Before the album's release, the promotional fade-out CD was available for illegal download via Napster. Interestingly, it also included Halleluja, which was unreleased at the time.[6]

Other songs

In addition to the 11 songs released on the album, the band recorded more songs during the Mutter sessions:

The following songs are also believed to have been recorded:

In a photo of Oliver, a board with 24 different song titles can be seen behind him. The last song title appears to be Student, but no other songs can be deciphered from the photo.

Promotion

The album was promoted with a promotional release of the album, which included only 3 minutes of all songs and then they fade out. Along with that CD came a folder which included a few sheets, which had a Rammstein alphabet on them. Another special promotional item was the interview CD, which featured answers by Olli and Flake. The following is the alphabet, taken from the promotional sheets of the album:

German original

A - Alben

E - Erfolg
Rammstein hatten schon viel davon.

I - Irritationen

J - Jacob Hellner
Never change a winning team.

R - Remixes
Als Remixer stehen Rammstein auf den Wunschlisten vieler Künstler. Faith No More, Korn und Rob Zombie sind nur einige, mit denen sie bislang gearbeitet haben.

S - Sex

V - Video/DVD
"Live in Berlin". Aufgenommen am 22. und 23. August 1998. Auf der Berliner Wuhlheide demonstrieren Rammstein eine perfekte Bühnenshow.

English Deepl translation

A - Albums
With their brute mixture of metal, pop and techno, Rammstein are one of the most successful rock bands in Europe. Their debut Herzeleid (1995) was certified platinum. The follow-up Sehnsucht (1997) was not only the logical continuation of the musical concept, but also even more successful than album No. 1. With platinum in Germany AND in the USA, as well as numerous awards in other European countries, Rammstein secured their place in the history of rock music. A development which is consequently continued with the third album Mutter (> M). RELEASE DATE: 02.04.2001.

B - Band
Rammstein are Flake Lorenz (Keyboards), Oliver Riedel (Bass), Christoph Schneider (Drums), Paul Landers (Guitar), Richard Z. Kruspe-Bernstein (Guitar) and Till Lindemann (Vocals). There have been no line-up changes since the band was formed in 1993.

C - Charts
Rammstein's home. No single and no album that did not find its way there. Sehnsucht, for example, landed at number 1 in the Media Control charts immediately after its release and stayed there for five weeks!

D - Germany
Rammstein sing in German. Unlike most of their colleagues, they have also never seriously tried anything else. "Why should we?" think Rammstein. "We wanted to do something of our own, and that has to do with our country of origin. That happens to be Germany."

E - Success
Rammstein already had a lot of it. In 1998 they received an Echo for the best video (Engel) and in the same year the Viva Comet for the best live band. In 1999 there was the Echo as the most successful national artist abroad (Sehnsucht), because Rammstein are after Kraftwerk the only German-speaking band that could also make a name for themselves internationally. After all, Rammstein made it into the American Billboard Charts, toured extensively there (> F) and were nominated for both Grammy (> G and T) and MTV Europe Awards.

F - Family Values Tour
The most important rock tour in the US, next to which even the legendary Lolla Palooza festivals paled. Rammstein were right there in the inaugural year. As the second headliner of the Korn Family Values Tour, they toured the North American continent in the fall of '98 and let it rip - in the truest sense of the word. On Rammstein's US tour in June '99, with Skunk Anansie, Soulfly and Mindless Self Indulgence as support acts, the authorities of Worcester, Massachusetts felt called upon when Till (with plastic phallus strapped on) and Flake did their number on Bück dich. Actually, a staple of any Rammstein live show. For the U.S. law enforcers, however, too much of a good thing. Due to "lascivious stageacting", so the accusation, both were arrested directly from the stage and put behind bars for one night. The final sentence: $100 fine and six months probation.

G - Grammy
The most important award in the American music industry for the most successful artists of a year. It can be compared to the Oscar in the film industry. In 1999, Rammstein became the first German band ever to be nominated in the category "Best Metal Performance" (for Du hast).

H - Humor
Have Rammstein far more than some would like to give them credit for. Rammstein play with the horror of lust and sometimes overdo it so much that it becomes a black comedy. This may (> F and I) lead to misunderstandings.

I - Irritations
There were numerous around Rammstein. The provocative lyrics, a mixture of eerily beautiful creepy romanticism to crude club-from-the-bag fantasies, may not have been entirely innocent. A discussion that was most recently fueled when, for the video for the Depeche Mode cover Stripped, clips from Leni Riegenstahl films were used, Rammstein provoked and - criticized by tracing the aestheticization of the present back to its (dangerous) origins.

J - Jacob Hellner
Never change a winning team. Mutter was produced by Jacob Hellner (among others Clawfinger), who also worked on Herzeleid and Sehnsucht. Why, the band can probably explain best themselves: "Jacob is the ideal producer for Rammstein, because he does not interfere with the songwriting. When the songs are finished, we work with him to make them even stronger. He also knows how to give musicians confidence so they can bring out the best in themselves during a recording process. He is also very disciplined and has a regular rhythm. This works very well for us as a band. He's so focused in his work that after a day in the studio he sways like he's had too much to drink."

K - Concerts
USA, Japan, Australia, Europe, South America - there is hardly a spot on this planet where Rammstein haven't already set off their rockets. They are one of the bands that define themselves not least by their live shows. These are characterized by a monstrous array of pyrotechnic effects and have more to do with a styled-through theater production than with casual togetherness. Rammstein's concerts are characterized by grand gestures that linger in the viewer's mind as afterimages.

L - Lynch, David
Cult director of films like "Blue Velvet," "Eraserhead," "Twin Peaks" and "Wild At Heart." For the soundtrack to his abysmal film "Lost Highway" he chose two Rammstein songs.

M - Mother
The new album. Rammstein have continued to develop and yet have not made the mistake of compromising their own identity. On Mutter they have stuck to what they do best. And that is a bombastic mixture of razor-sharp riffs, monolithic song structures, goosebump-inducing shivering romance and the gloomy vocals, which have never been as ambitious as on Mutter. In addition, they have added some new elements that fit smoothly into the sound and do not scratch the recognition value. Mutter is still pure Rammstein. Just a bit more perfect. And sharper. And more exciting. And much better. With Mutter the band might never have come so close to their goal of merging the harmonies of pop with the hard riffs of metal.

N - Imitators
There were many. After Rammstein's success with Herzeleid and Sehnsucht, the talent scouts of the record companies could no longer stay behind their desks. In the hope to get a piece of the big cake, they went in search of Rammstein epigones. With more or less moderate success. Who wants the copy when you can have the original?

O - Official Fan Club
Rammstein and their fans - a very special relationship. Rammstein like to present unreleased songs to their fan club members at selected gigs - all under exclusion of the public. And this also concerns the employees of their record company...

P - Presence
Those who know Rammstein (> F, K) know that there can be no more urgent need for them after the completion of a new album than to finally present themselves live to their fans again. How they intend to surpass their opulent and sometimes eccentric stage show (> F, I), we do not want to reveal at this point. No question, however, that it will continue to be hot...

Q - Smoke
There's plenty of that at Rammstein concerts. Till Lindemann in his burning coat is the landmark of every Rammstein show. For the gigantic pyro effects he made a pyro certificate especially. Yet all the bombast only goes back to an old complaint of the singer: "The songs of Herzeleid were very static. In the instrumental passages I always felt like shit. I held onto the mic stand while other frontmen danced or flung something through the air. But that wouldn't have fit our music. And especially not for me. Then I got these two fountains in my hand from somewhere. And that's how whole development exploded."

R - Remixes
As remixers, Rammstein are on the wish lists of many artists. Faith No More, Korn and Rob Zombie are just a few they've worked with so far.

S - Sex
A central theme in Rammstein's songs. And God knows it's not always about the beautiful sides of human togetherness. Rammstein's ironic play with S/M fantasies - for example in Bück dich or Rein raus (on Mutter) - sometimes leads (> F, I and L) to misunderstandings.

T - Tarantino, Quentin
Cult director of films like "Pulp Fiction" and "From Dusk 'Til Dawn". From his "Reservoir Dogs" lie Rammstein the optics for their video for Du hast, Rammstein worldwide most successful song (> G).

U - Entertainment
Rammstein are true entertainers. No wonder they are so successful in the USA and the legendary make-up rockers of Kiss invited them as special guests on their South American tour. Even their fiercest opponents must grudgingly admit that a Rammstein show is first and foremost great entertainment.

V - Video/DVD
"Live in Berlin". Recorded on 22nd]] and 23rd August 1998. At Berlin's Wuhlheide Rammstein demonstrate a perfect stage show.

Trivia

  • The South Korean version of the album had a small batch of misprints: the R-logo was mirrored on the CD.
  • The tour edition of the album credits the four live songs to have been recorded on 1 August 2001 in Hamburg. Actually the band never played a concert on 1 August 2001. Sonne and Spieluhr were recorded on 1 June 2001 in Hanover, Ich will and Links 2-3-4 were recorded on 18 May 2001 in Berlin.
  • On some cassettes from Türkiye the songs fade out at 3:44, which was a company mistake.
  • The tour edition of the album was rereleased during Universal's Archive Collection releases. In the booklet Links 2-3-4 was called Links 2-3-4 In Arbeit.
  • A Mexican promotional cassette was sent to Radio Órbita 105.7F.M. on which Feuer frei! is written as Feur fuer. Till and Paul are introducing each song in Spanish, followed by a 40 seconds sample of the mentioned song.
