Information

Recording

After the Made in Germany Tour was finished in 2013, the band took a break for one year. After they met again, they collectively decided to have another year off. When in 2015 the band then got back together,[2] they felt that they had a lot to work out with each other, in order to be fully able to make music together again.[3] On 10 May 2017, producer Sky van Hoff posted in his blog about working with Rammstein.[4] During the pre-production Richard worked on his demos with Till, which both then presented the others during meetings.[5]

The band went to the La Fabrique studios in France, with about 30 songs.[3] The recordings were started with Olsen Involtini and Tom Dalgety. At the beginning the band had problems to work together with Olsen and Tom, as both were not classical producers to say what the band should do.[5]

In total the band recorded and mixed 16 songs.[6]

Other songs

One song is known to exist from the recordings that has not yet been released:

Also the band had two different versions of the song Deutschland before deciding on the finally released album version.[3]

Album title and cover

In his podcast Die Sendung, Flake revealed that the band couldn't decide the album's title. Rammstein usually used one of the song titles from the album, but this time, none of the song titles really fit. At one point, the band considered adding all song titles as the album name like Ausländer, Deutschland, Hallomann. Then it was decided, that the album won't have any title. That didn't work, because of the distribution system. If the album's title is empty, the system just picks the band's name as its title. Flake said that was "unimaginative", and the band used the simplest album cover.[7]

The band thought about calling the album "Dam, dam." This is a phrase from their song Puppe, which they got from a 1965 song called "Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht" by Drafi Deutscher.[8]

Placeholder artwork

On 18 April 2019, a trailer was released[9] alongside the reveal of the album artwork and tracklist. Prior to this date, a placeholder artwork with a silver Rammstein logo on black background was provided alongside a tracklist consisting of partially censored song titles and placeholder track lengths.

The album was promoted with short audio snippets, that all featured just one instrument, i.e. only guitars or only drums. All those videos were uploaded to the official Rammstein YouTube channel.[10]

Rammstein also held a listening session on Spotify on release day, where the album was played simultaneously to every registered member. All members were able to write comments during the listening session. It took place exclusively on the now defunct website listening.rammstein.de.

Starting on release day of the album, a big truck went on a tour through different cities in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria. At every stop people were given a special code, with which they could win 2x 2 tickets for sold-out concerts of the Europe Stadium Tour 2019. The codes had to be entered on the, also now defunct, website truck.rammstein.de.

When you bought the album in Germany through the retailers Media Markt or Saturn, you got a free promotional shirt with the album, which was only available for one day and has not been sold officialy since then.

Tattoo advertising

On 19 May 2019, the band announced a free tattoo opportunity. When you bought the album at Fingerprints Music in Long Beach, CA, between 2PM and 8PM on 20 May you had the chance of getting a free Rammstein logo tattoo.
