Mein Teil is a song by Rammstein. It is the second track on the Reise, Reise album.

Background

In 2003, a fan interviewed Paul about the then-upcoming album Reise, Reise. Paul mentioned the working title Nein, but also said that it won't be the final name of the song. Paul himself suggested names like Schlachter or Der Metzger.^[2]
The song is about Armin Meiwes, a German man who set up a meeting with another man through a cannibalistic online forum. The plan was for Armin and the man to consume the latter's penis, and then Armin would consume parts of him during a prolonged period of time. Someone brought a newspaper article about the case to the studio and this inspired the band to make a song about it.^[3]
The single version includes an intro spoken by Olli,^[4] the album version lacks this intro because the band wanted it to start directly, therefore making it sound more aggressive. This intro quotes Armin Meiwes' forum post.
In Flake's book It's the World's Birthday Today, he writes about the creation of this song: "Our banger was supposed to be "Mein Teil". We owed the basic musical idea to Paul, and at first we had some placeholder lyrics that were about the world ending and no one surviving, and I thought the song sounded too forced, like it was trying too hard to be mean. I made fun of it and complained about it again and again. In our band, you have to say something very often and very loudly if you want to be paid attention to. Mercifully, Till brought us some lyrics about the alleged cannibal of Rotenburg, told from the victim's perspective. Everyone was excited."^[5]
