Information
Recording took place on 22 and 23 August 1998. Later that year, Motor Music invited 200 fans to a choir singing session in Berlin. This all to create the best possible crowd for Live aus Berlin's post-production. For two days, from 24 October to 26 October 1998, fans give their best under the direction of producer Jacob Hellner.[1]
Formats
The live release came as CD, MC, VHS and DVD. The CD was released in three different formats: The standard version included only one CD with 15 songs on it. The special edition includes 2 CDs with the full concerts plus three videos. The special edition was also released at German WOM stores with printed signatures on the case. The MC is the same as the standard CD. The standard edition is missing the songs Herzeleid, Klavier and Tier. On 29 October 2021 the standard CD was re-released in a digipak.
The VHS of the release came in two versions: censored and uncensored. The censored version is missing the performance of Bück dich, and therefore only includes 17 songs. The uncensored VHS includes the full show. The DVD release is the same as the censored VHS. The DVD was re-released on 27 March 2020 in a digipak. The re-release is now uncensored and includes Bück dich. Additionally there are two different versions of the re-release: the first version misspelled the word "Angles" on the back as "Angels". The second version has this mistake corrected.
Fancontest
The original DVD from 1999 includes a quiz, which you can only play when you insert the DVD into your computer. The quiz contains 140 questions with three possible answers. The quiz is divided into two levels. When finishing the first level, the user gets told on how to enter the hidden music video for Stripped. After finishing the second level the DVD shared a link and a password to download a Rammstein screensaver from the website.
This contest and the music video are missing on the 2021 re-release of the DVD.
Easter Egg
When the CD starts playing Spiel mit mir it is possible to directly hit the rewind button and to rewind the song. There is some more crowd noise audible.
There is also one easter egg on the DVD. When typing 23 on your remote while being in the main menu, it unlocks the music video for Stripped. This easter egg is revealed when completing the first level of the computer quiz.
Promotion
There were a few promotional releases for this. In Germany there was a promotional CD with 2 CDs, just as the special edition of the album. While the content is mostly the same, the second CD of the promotional release is missing the video for Tier, which was then added for the commercial release. The USA had a 1 CD promotional release, with the standard 15 tracks.
Beside the promotional audio releases, there was also promotional releases for the video. Germany received the uncensored 18 track promotional VHS. A VHS was also released in the USA, with only Sehnsucht as the main video on it. The cut of Sehnsucht on this release is different from the one used in the concert movie and features many scenes from other songs as well. This alternate cut was then later released on Lichtspielhaus".
The VHS and DVD releases were promoted with newsletters (actual letters), sent to fanclub members back then. The release of the VHS and the DVD each got a separate newsletter.
