Sehnsucht tracklist | |
Spiel mit mir is the seventh song on the album Sehnsucht by Rammstein.
Background
- The working title of the song was Ich war mit dir. It comes from a repeated line from the early-1996 version of the song.
- The line "Das Schwesterlein ertrinkt im Gin" from Till's poem Asche zu Asche, which was released in the book Rammstein in 2001, was changed into "Die Stiefmama ertrinkt im Gin" and re-used in the demo version of the song played live at some shows in the middle of 1996.
2023 Mix

Live performance
Herzeleid Tour
Spiel mit mir debuted in January 1996. The song featured different lyrics, a different structure, and was generally just a lot longer. No stunts or effects were associated with the song at this point. This version of the song was played until March of the same year. In June, its lyrics were revised, but the overall length and structure remained. Till now also performed the song while holding a female doll. The doll would look burned and dirty, and would have a red laser pointer in the place of one of its eyes. Also unique to the June performances was that Richard would go backstage during the instrumental break following the first chorus of the song, and return with his hat on fire. He would continue playing the song like this and go put out his hat during the small pause inbetween songs.
In July, the song was again performed with altered lyrics. The doll remained during the performance, but Richard's hat would no longer get set on fire. The last known lyrical and structural revision before finalization was in September, this version was performed until the end of the tour in October. Till sometimes sung "Lalala" after "Spiel mit mir" in the refrains. On one occasion, on 27 September, a "Rammstein" signboard was ignited during the song. This effect was usually reserved for performances of Seemann at the time. The instrumentals of the intro during this time would later get used during the during the song's bridge, with a new synth intro getting used to replace it.
Sehnsucht Tour
From April to August 1997, the song would be performed in its finalized form and the doll would still be present during these performances. Rather than keeping the doll on him at all times, Till would usually throw the doll away right before Richard and Paul played the guitar solo. Also, instead of starting to sing directly after the solo, Till would usually be sucking on his thumb while an extended instrumental break was performed. On 17 August, Flake used a big musical saw during this instrumental.
From September to October, Spiel mit mir was used as the opening song for the concert. During this time, fire would slowly go up the stage curtains, before exploding at the top and dropping the curtains. When the curtains dropped, the synth intro would start playing. Soon after, small explosions would go off on the stage, after which each band member got a spotlight on them. First Flake, then Paul, Schneider, Richard and finally Olli. Till would not be present on the stage at this time. When each member was revealed, the synth intro would go on for a little longer, before everyone started playing their respective instruments.
A fake bass drum placed in front of Schneider's drumset would start to burn and Till would push it over, revealing that he was hiding in a space underneath it. Till would wear a special stage outfit during the song's performance, as well as goggles with a laser pointer coming out of the left eye. He would often gaze over the audience with this laser as if he were "scanning" them, as well as crouch walk whilst moving his arms from side to side. During the guitar solo, Richard and Paul would go to the center of the stage, with Paul often leaning his head on Richard's shoulder whilst playing. Till would be standing behind them, where he would remove his goggles and start sucking on his thumb. While finishing the solo, Till would slowly jump forwards, ending up at the center of the stage again, in order to resume singing. He would occasionally still sing the "Lalala" after the last "Spiel mit mir". For the rest of 1997, the song would not be performed with the stage outfit or laser goggles.
In 1998 the song would get performed in the same manner as before, its stage antics dependant on its place on the setlist. It would get performed without any effects if it was the first song of the encore, but if it was the opening song, the same band reveal stunt was done. On 30 May, the stage was filled with smoke after the guitar solo. On 8 August the song was performed as opener, but with the normal stage outfit. On 9 August the band reveal stunt was done, but smoke formed in front of Schneider's drumset. In the smoke, an explosion would take place, after which Till would walk out of the smoke. On 22 and 23 August the same stunt was performed again, except this time Till wore the special outfit and descended from the ceiling whilst standing on a container that rained sparks from its bottom.
In 1999, the band reveal stunt was still in use, and the burning bass drum returned as well. Till would wear his special outfit and laser goggles again, and the "Lalala" lyric returned after every last "Spiel mit mir".
